Cream Cheese & Dried Beef Dip |
I don't even know what the official name of this recipe is, but I know I love it. One of my colleagues at Clive Elementary makes this once or twice a year for various staff luncheons, birthdays, what have you. She brings a huge bowl of the stuff alongside a huge bowl of bagel pieces that she has lovingly cut into bite-sized pieces for us to devour over the course of the day. And devour it we do.
I finally got the recipe and made it myself, and oh my goodness. I need to limit myself to once or twice a year with this recipe too, because it's addicting. One recipe is plenty, but if you're making it for a crowd, I suggest making a recipe and a half. That way, you ensure leftovers for yourself. What you see pictured above is actually a half recipe.
Cream Cheese and Dried Beef Dip
Ingredients:
- 2 packages cream cheese (8 oz. each)
- 16 oz. sour cream
- 1 teaspoon dry dill weed
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt, but garlic POWDER)
- 1 (5 oz.) jar Hormel dried beef*, chopped up
- 6-8 plain bagels, sliced and cut into 8ths or 12ths.
Mix the first five ingredients together, refrigerate, and serve with bagels.
*Dried beef is also sold in 2.5 oz. packages in the prepackaged deli meat section of some grocery stores.

DeleteThe original recipe for this can be found in the 1979 Pillsbury Cookbook. Since Pillsbury and Hormel are both Minnesota companies, the recipe would have to be designated as Minnesotan. I'm surprised at the variation found here; I consider myself an appetizer historian.

ReplyDeleteHmm. If it were me adding green onion, I'd start with maybe a tablespoon or so of very thinly sliced green onion, taste it, and keep adding more until it tasted the way I wanted it to.
DeleteI use cream cheese and green onions, but add a can of mushrooms (drained and chopped) and a can of chopped black olives (drained) and use Accent Salt to taste. Yummy!!! Can also roll in flour tortilla and cut for pinwheels.
ReplyDeleteThis recipe is gross. Made it and we threw it out. All we tasted was a mouthful of sour cream and cream cheese!
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm curious to know if you made the recipe and served it as indicated in the recipe or if you made any alterations in ingredients or what you ate it with. And if you do not normally like things like cream cheese and sour cream, then maybe this just wasn't the recipe for you. Please let me know as it bums me out when people make such strong negative statements on my personal blog. Thanks!
DeleteWe make a cream cheese spread titled Arizona Dip with radishes, green onions and dried beef. It is pretty at Christmas, but we make it year round and serve with veggies and crackers
ReplyDeleteMy first taste of this was in Illinois at a party...over 30 years ago, so I know it has been around for a long time...many variations, and the blue cheese with the chipped beef is good. I like it with the green onion, or minced onion. Since the dried beef is so salty, I would avoid adding any more salt, unless you are a saltaholic... :)

DeleteI used to make this but instead of the dill and garlic my recipe aas for Korr Leek soup mix. I also found if you want it less aalty you can rinse the beef and pat dry with paper towels before chopping
ReplyDeleteI serve mine in a howled out bread round , either Pumpernickel or Rye. Cut up the bread for dipping/ scooping
